How to prepare a suitable space to work from your home

How to prepare a suitable space to work from your home

Posted by Facundo Ovideo on 31st Oct 2021

During the pandemic we get used to working from home and become familiar with terms like 'remote work' or 'WFH'. After all this quarantine time, we found that working at home would be part of the new normal. It is time to start designing a special space to work from the comfort of home and assume that this will be a very used space from now on. That is why, together with our team of professionals in interior design and design, we thought of a series of tips to plan the workspaces within the home.

Working at home is not an easy task. It is a challenge for concentration, since the distractions of a space intended for another use make it more difficult to connect and focus on the obligations. That is why it is necessary to think about what are the aspects that contribute so that working at home is dynamic and efficient. Furniture and lighting are key aspects when creating an environment conducive to work, but not the only ones. Here are some tips that can help you create an ideal space to work at home without losing productivity or efficiency.

Lighting is one of the most important aspects to consider. Beyond the intensity and temperature of the light, it is important to think about the location. Keeping your desk properly lit will allow your eyes to not overexert themselves and to fatigue faster. We recommend locating your workstation in spaces where there is controlled natural lighting (using curtains and blinds). Natural light will allow you to see clearly while illuminating the space in a warm way. It has a desk lamp that allows you to point the light in the areas you need. If it also allows you to regulate the intensity, you can adapt it according to the time of day. A floor lamp is also a good idea since it does not take up space in the work area and allows a larger diameter of light.

Remember that in this new way of working, you will make many video calls. Correctly illuminate the space and your face from the front to avoid shadows on the face. A soft light lamp that can be at the same height as your face will avoid unwanted shadows.

Posture is decisive when spending many hours sitting in front of a computer. Choosing your seat correctly is a key factor in a good workspace at home. Choose chairs that can adapt their height and with wheels that allow you to make small movements in your work area. The leather upholstery looks sophisticated but we recommend chairs with materials that allow mesh-type ventilation so as not to influence body temperature. Choose a color that doesn't get dirty easily. High-back chairs will allow you to support your upper back, providing comfort to relax your head.

The desk is a fundamental piece of a workspace. Working from bed or at the dining room table is no longer an alternative when done every day. Choosing a work desk that best suits your needs will substantially change your willingness to work. If you have space, choose large desks for a larger work surface. If, on the other hand, you have little space, there are some very practical and functional options that take advantage of every inch to optimize space. Always have a side table to support drinks or food to avoid accidents that can damage your computer or other work tools.

Finally, especially for those who work with creativity, it is important to always feel inspired. You can hang some pieces of art on the walls to let your imagination run wild. Also aromas and colors can inspire you, in this case, a glass vase, candles, flowers and plants are some options that can help you create an environment conducive to generating ideas.
